What is a PASS Leader? A Course Mentor?

PASS Leaders and Course Mentors are students who are prepared to share what they have learned over the years about how to study. They know the course content and are anxious to help guide you through it. What they won’t do is lecture; their job is to help students think about the lectures they hear and the books they read, and then put it all together into some kind of perspective during  review sessions so students can learn the material efficiently.

Job Summary

Students who perform well in traditionally difficult courses are nominated by their teachers for the program. Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) Leaders and Course Mentors (CM) are paired with an instructor and paid to lead two or three study sessions based on the course material each week. They are also paid for their preparation time.

The role of the PASS Leader or CM involves modeling behavior that translates to success in the classroom. The employee works with students who voluntarily attend study sessions, generating relevant discussions and activities that enable students to feel empowered when encountering difficult material.

PASS Leaders and Course Mentors participate in extensive training that starts with an orientation the week before classes start in the fall and spring. They also enroll in IDS 310 Leadership, a one-credit hour leadership course. We pay for the course and textbook. More information will be provided to successful candidates.
